Making mismatched body panels look....cool?

They made these as one-offs too. Only 300 made.

I don't know about "cool," but the rareness and weirdness sure makes them interesting to me. Curious if they'll ever be worth anything*

*other than MK3 Golf fanatics.

I would definitely pay more for one. I mean, if I get in an accident: I can use any old body panel, not have to repaint, and not have to report it! No one would know...

I saw one of these for sale near my work for a long time. Thought it wasn't selling because somebody butchered the appearance! Then I found out it was a 'real thing'. Clearly a niche market car! Not for me, but I can understand niche cars!

I just realized that VW's color pallette for the MK3 Golf was basically inspired by Bill Cosby's sweaters.

Even better are the Harlequins that came in all-green. This was actually a special shade of green that wasn't offered in the US except on the 'quin.

If VW's weren't so terrible, I'd be tempted to make my own Harlequin with various doors and shit from the junkyard.

Little known fun facts:

- The Harlekinn cars were originally made as a marketing tool. They were supposed to symbolize the different ways to customize a VW via options and option packages.

- The cars were built by taking four cars off the assembly line and then switching the panels. They are usually designated by the color of the body. So the Golf you posted is a green one, while this Polo is ared one.

I just published this article about the exact thing! For the record it was only 264 cars that made it to the US... :)

Mk3 golfs/jettas with the 2.0L 4 and the 5-speed manual are actually some of the most trouble free vehicles you can get. They handle pretty well too and are pretty nice cars to drive for being basic crapcans. When I was at Eurohangar, I saw a few of these harlequins and with aftermarket wheels, they look stunning.
